 Olympic Games » Athens 2004

The 2004 Olympic games will take place in Athens during the month of August. During 17 days of August 2004, athletes from nearly 200 countries will compete in 28 sports in 296 events. About 11,000 men and women, accompanied by 5,000 trainers, physiotherapists and team leaders etc. will take part in the Games.

Currently preparations are underway for the biggest sports event on the planet. The major public works, which have been completed, have altered the geographic makeup of Attica. The state of the art "Eleftherios Venizelos" Airport, the new "Attica highway, the new Olympic stadium, arterial interchanges, bridges, expansions of the Metropolitan subway and many works have contributed to the solution of the biggest problem which most European capitals encounter, traffic congestion.

The latest major public work of the program is the Olympic village, which will host most of the athletes and their entourage. Due to red tape the completion of the project has been set back. However no one is especially concerned since the regular inspectors of the I.O.C are satisfied with progress.

In our opinion the issue of the security is a no issue since already major preparations by the authorities are underway. Also since Greece is one of the safest nations on the globe. The crime rate is just about the lowest on the continent of Europe, according to statistics of the European Union. For this reason we can conclude that in Athens the presence of a law enforcement alarms rather than pacifies people.

Everything points to the return of the Olympic games to their point of origin, may also become springboard for the permanent location where they will take place and belong. This was proposed by the former President Constantine Karamanlis, that the games take place in new facilities at Olympia, the ancient locale where they were held uninterrupted for 12 successive centuries.

The implementation of the "Olympic truce", of sportsmanship, fair play and the "Olympism" must occur as soon as possible the sooner the better, and include pacifism as well as the creative participation of all the people on the earth.

"A number of International Athletic Federations representing sports such as squash, karate, technical swimming, billiards and bowling have also presented their candidature to be included in the 2004 Games Programme.
The Board of Directors of "Athens 2004" has decided to introduce Water skiing candidature to the appreciation of the International Olympic Committee.
