The latest jewel of Athens

In less than 5 years the amazing construction of the new cultural center Stavros Niarhos is completed. The complex is in the bay of Phaliron in Athens , includes new facilities for the Greek National Library  and the National Opera, as well as the 210,000 m² park. The Center was designed by architect Renzo Piano and is being built by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The €580 million project was completed in 2016, cost almost equal as the Parthenon of Acropolis, and is donated to the Greek state in 2017.

The plan for a big donation by the foundation started in 1998. Initially the foundation planned to make separate donations. In 2006 it was decided to build one complex for both organizations and after discussions with the Greek state the area of the former horse racing track was chosen as the ideal location. In 2008 the foundation chose Italian architect Renzo Piano to design the completely ecological complex and in 2012 construction works started. I have seen the construction works all the time, day by day from my balcony. . Dozens of cultural events and activities take place monthly and all is excellent organized. It is the latest "jewel" for Athens.
