President Obama historical visit at the Acropolis
At the Acropolis, Parthenon. and new Acropolis museum. The president was very well informed and seriously interested in the Greek culture.He stated: "One of the great joys being the president, is the ability to travel and see different cultures and meet different people. That’s important for our national security but it’s also important for us to understand ourselves and our place in the world." Wise words of the president...
Here he's looking carefully and with great attention the Archaic statue of the "moschophoros" (man carrying a calf), wich is found on the Acropolis hill-top, burried. It was decorative item in front of the previous to Parthenon archaic "Ecatompedos" temple. When the Parthenon was build, the older (temple) and half-destroyed art-works have been carefully burried in the south-west of the "new" Parthenon. In picture: the president with professor D. When in the year 480 BC, after the Thermopylae battles the Persians proceeded to the vacated Athens, destroyed the Acropolis with the holy temples and all sacred votive offerings, Pericles a few years later comissioned the renovation of the Acropolis. All the ruins still in the surrounding area were gathered in a later called "the Persian ditch" and burried ceremonial. The Persian "tomb-ditch" was discovered in the excavations of the Acropolis hill-top, in 1866 to 1869. All the items in picture are from these excavations...
