Discover the Christian Byzantine era and it's legacy. Meteoro means in Greek, the hanging in the air. Driving through the mountains to seethe spectacular monasteries almost suspended in the sky! On top of the high-rising rocks, you wonder how the monasteries were build in such amazing scale. You'll visit 3 of the monasteries and see all of them. You will also have the opportunity to see the historic battlefield of the 300 Spartans, Thermopylae.

Tour overview

Your private tour starts from your Athens hotel and we will take you to central Greece, Thessaly. The first stop is at Thermopylae, to see the famous battlefield of the legendary 300 heroic Spartans. The site is wonderful and in the nearby new museum, interest artifacts and 3-D video-screen, to see virtual the battle. Drive to Lamia city and in the mountains of inland Greece, through Karditsa and Trikala, we will arrive at Kalampaka. The town in the foothill of the gigantic rocks complex of Meteora. We will visit 3 from the 6 visit-able monasteries, St, Steven, Holly Trinity and the Transfiguration (better know as Megalo Meteoro) monasteries. A great local traditional lunch is next and after that we will head back to Athens.

What to expect

The tour is private and you can customize your own itinerary, and visit the 3 monasteries on your own pace. The vehicle, VAN or minibus offers comfort and climate control. The monasteries are in a circle of high-rocks, and we will make the tour of all of the monasteries, from Kalampaka to Kastraki picturesque village. The amazing and unique nature phenomenon at Meteora, is created some 60 million years ago, when all the plain of Thessaly was a huge lake. Perched on high cliffs, and accessible by rock-cut stairs, in the monasteries will allow you a close-up experience of the hermetic life of the monks and nuns. In the afternoon you will have the chance to try some of the best local traditional dishes. Return and detour in Athens after a long journey of about 12 hours.

A dress code applies to enter places of worship.
No shorts or sleeveless tops allowed. Knees and shoulders MUST be covered for both men and women.
